Quarter-Circle Circle Ranch

Winter 07 / 08

Dec. 12, 2007 brought heavy snow and the snow just kept coming.  Wave after wave, the storms rolled through.

To keep it open so that we could feed the horses and cows, it took hours each day on the tractors.

Most of the plow ridges are 6 to 10 feet tall.  One mountain of snow down below the barn is bigger and taller than any of the one room cabins.

Night time temperatures have been below zero, most often –15 to –30.  Day time temps have only a few times made it into the +20s.

The Antelope moved in and their numbers increased to about 200.  They liked the salt and mineral we put out for the horses and cows.  They also fed where the horses pawed through the snow and picked some where we fed.  Hard wind the 3rd weekend of January cleared nearby ridges and they moved off.

The county has kept the road open most of the time, but in places it is a one lane road.  For those of you that ask about the rows of rocks off to the side of the road in summer and fall, they are the result of the snow traps they plow on the windward side.  Visible in the bottom picture on the left.

Feed, keep water open for the stock, plow snow and keep the house warm, is what my winter is about.

We hope you are staying warm this winter.
